Basic Concepts in Cardiology

چکیده
Composed of type I and III collagens, the valve leaflets, chordae tendineae and collagen matrix of the myocardium form a structural continuum. Synthesized by cardiac fibroblasts, these fibrillar collagens support and tether myocytes to maintain their alignment, whereas their respective tensile strength and resilience resist the deformation, maintain the shape and thickness, prevent the rupture and contribute to the passive and active stiffness of the myocardium. An acquired or congenital defect in this collagen network can lead to abnormalities in myocardial architecture, mechanics or valve function. In the hypertrophic process that accompanies a pressure overload, for example, increased collagen synthesis, fibroblast proliferation and a structural and biochemical remodeling of the matrix are seen. This includes distinctive patterns of reparative and reactive myocardial fibrosis, each of which alters diastolic and systolic myocardial stiffness and may lead to pathologic

New challenges of geriatric cardiology: from clinical to preclinical research
The field of geriatric cardiology reflects the evolving medical approaches tailored to address the needs of the growing population of oldest old with cardiovascular diseases (CVD). The burden of CVD is expected to increase particularly for the most common types of chronic heart disease of the elderly including coronary artery disease, heart failure and atrial fibrillation. In this context of dr...
متن کاملDeveloping a UMLS-based Ontology of Cardiology Procedures for Cognitive Support in Medical Decision Making
Modularity of mental processes is a structural and functional characteristic of their organizational complexity. Medical reasoning and decision making are conducted in specific, parallel and interconnected process levels. Ontology is a formal conceptualization of a particular knowledge about the world, through the explicit representation of basic concepts, relations, and inference rules about t...
متن کاملElectrophysiology for Clinicians. Editors: Miguel A Barrero Garcia, Paul Khairy, Laurent Macle, Stanely Nattel. Cardiotext Publishing, LLC
Cardiac electrophysiology is a rapidly expanding sub speciality of cardiology with ever increasing new information coming in every day, with quite a few journals devoted to it. Complexity of arrhythmias are sometimes puzzling for a busy cardiologist and so are electrophysiology studies. Electrophysiology for Clinicians is a concise book on basic concepts of cardiac electrophysiology for the bus...
متن کاملMicroRNAs in heart failure: Small molecules with major impact
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have emerged as potent modulators of mammalian gene expression, thereby broadening the spectrum of molecular mechanisms orchestrating human physiological and pathological cellular functions. Growing evidence suggests that these small non-coding RNA molecules are pivotal regulators of cardiovascular development and disease. Importantly, multiple miRNAs have been specifically i...
متن کاملBasic Concepts in Metastatic Cardiac Disease
The involvement of the heart in metastatic cancer is a rare clinical diagnosis, as it may be asymptomatic or symptoms, when present, may be attributed to other causes. Issues regarding incidence, intracardiac location, clinical presentation, diagnosis and treatment of metastatic cardiac tumors will be discussed here.
متن کاملConceptual Foundations of Systems Biology Explaining Complex Cardiac Diseases
Systems biology is an important concept that connects molecular biology and genomics with computing science, mathematics and engineering. An endeavor is made in this paper to associate basic conceptual ideas of systems biology with clinical medicine. Complex cardiac diseases are clinical phenotypes generated by integration of genetic, molecular and environmental factors. Basic concepts of syste...
